She was always the Christmas one. First awake. First out of bed. Waiting not-so-patiently for him to wake up. Jake didn’t seem like one to propose on a special occasion or a day like Christmas. Christine thought it would happen randomly. On a Monday. Definitely not on a holiday. So a proposal wasn’t even on her radar. And this is exactly what Jake had hoped for….
You know that feeling when you wake up in the morning and you can feel the person next to you is awake? Before she even opened her eyes, Christine knew that Jake was up. Excited and waiting. She could just sense it. Typically she’s the one giddy and excited about Christmas, not him. But she wasn’t going to complain, it was sweet. Sleepily, she rubbed her eyes and asked Jake what time it was. In an oh-so-excited tone he responded, ‘It’s Christmas time”!! Of course, this made her smile and up she got.
Normally stockings were first, but not this year. Jake couldn’t wait to open presents and handed her a large box. Opening it, Christine found a selection of presents. Excited by each gift, she couldn’t believe how thoughtful he had been and was thrilled to discover an iPad. Noticing the case too, she thought Jake had been pretty clever (of course she needed a case, she was clumsy) but didn’t inspect it in much detail. He pressed her to look at the case, but at first she didn’t see it and couldn’t figure out why he was so insistent. Then there, engraved into the case, was the name “Christine Wellington” (his last name, not hers). Reading it and quickly realizing what it meant, she burst into a smile. And looked up to see Jake down on one knee. He asked her to be his wife and she, of course, said yes.
That year he had been the first awake. First out of bed. And waiting not-so-patiently for her to wake up. Jake knew Christine would never expect a proposal on Christmas morning. Not in a million years. And he was right. It was the perfect surprise and they spent the holiday celebrating as newly engaged. And now in a few days, they’ll celebrate their first Christmas together as husband and wife. Happy Holidays, C&J!
