There are one million things I love about you. Maybe even one million and one. You’re smart. Funny. Sweet. Handsome. Compassionate. Hard working. And a great father. I love the way you always have to sleep on the same side of the bed (even if we’re at a hotel half way across the world). That you put milk in your cereal, but will never drink a glass of it. You love Starwars. Cooking. Politics. Movies. And can talk about anything in between. You always put others first and make me and the girls feel like we are special. You always make us feel loved.
My favourite moments with you are the ones in between the chaos. When during the middle of a crazy day we stop to talk. Or the few minutes of silence before the day starts. I love watching you play with the girls. Chasing them across the yard. Curl up reading books. Torment the cats. Or play dolls (yes I just told the internet that you play dolls with the kids). Your love for them is beautiful. And you are their hero. You have been from the day they were born.
You’re my hero too. We had some illness and family loss this year. And you were our rock. Navigating the chaos and finding the calm somewhere in between. And again I was reminded that you are the glue that holds our family together. You put bandaids on skinned knees. Share reassuring words with the girls after school yard hurts. And make us feel like we are safe from anything in the world. Even zombies (and we both know how scary zombies are).
So, today on your birthday, I hope you know how special you are to us. That you are our hero. My best friend. The girls’ knight in shining armour. The very best. We love you for one million and one reasons. And that number grows every day. I look forward to being 90 and 92 together. Old and grey. Wrinkly and saggy. And by then the number will have grown to two million and one. Because every day I find more and more reasons to love you.
Happy birthday Ewan, we love you. Forever.
