I am so lucky to get to share my birthday week with one of my best friends. Over the years we have shared dinner to celebrate. Cake. And a glass of champagne. Today she turns 30 and in 2 days I’ll follow suit. In writing her birthday card it made me realize just how many birthdays we have celebrated together. Fifteen. Fifteen birthdays. That’s half of our lives! And it made me smile thinking about the special friends we have in our lives. And the ones who have become family over the years. We are truly lucky.
I remember reading somewhere once that friends are the family that you get to choose. And these words are so true. As I am coming up to my 30th birthday I have been so blessed to receive some very special cards from friends and chat about special memories together. Each one has made me smile. Laugh. Or tear up. We have had friends help clean our home when we have had babies. Bring meals when we have lost a loved one. Drop off flowers for no reason whatsoever. And been with us to celebrate every single milestone in life. Their families have become family to us too as we celebrate weddings, birthdays and anniversaries together. If we included them on our family tree it would be more like a forest.
As I’m in the final days before turning 30, I keep flipping back and forth between being excited and terrified. But no matter what I know I’m surrounded by some of the best family and friends on the planet. I’m thankful for those friends who have become family. And look forward to spending another 30+ years celebrating with them. I hope that when we’re 90 and old and grey we’ll still share dinner to celebrate. Eat lots of cake. And drink a glass of champagne. Maybe even two.
