This was our first weekend off since the last time snow fell. While we LOVE what we do, having a weekend off was amazing. It felt great to be normal for a couple of days. We had family down and had four kids under 2.5 and four adults under one roof. We had an amazing time and I look forward to doing it again soon. But I can’t wait to have a nap :)
1. The house across the road from us goes all out for Halloween. To the nines. There is a 9 foot spider on their roof and a whole crew of spooky characters. For the last two weeks Rachel has been pointing at the porch and saying ‘look it’s mommy’. We thought she was pointing at the spider or the ugly wolf and my feelings were starting to get a bit hurt. She kept saying ‘mommy is scary’ and hiding her face and running away. For two weeks I have thought our oldest daughter thought I resembled Frankenstein. Until Thursday when she pointed at the porch again and named the characters by name : Frankenstein, The big bad wolf, the ghost and the mommy. It turns out there is a MUMMY in the ensemble too and she was trying to tell us that there was a Mummy on the porch. My feelings suddenly weren’t so hurt. (The good).
2. We have reinvented the words to Frere Jacques to the names of our kids : “Sarah Phelan, Sarah Phelan, where are yoooou, where are you….” The other day in the car Sarah Elizabeth was crying and Ewan started singing to her to calm her down (bet you didn’t know he could totally win American Idol). Rachel piped up ” That’s not the right song” and asked him to stop. So he started singing a different one to which responded : “Oh, that’s much better. Thank you”. (The good).
3. First weekend off in 7 months resulted in a family weekend. Four kids under the age of 2.5. Four adults. Five and a half bottles of wine. (The very very bad).
4. Ewan : “I spy with my little eye something that is brown”.  Rachel : “Your glasses”.  Rachel : “I spy with my little eye something that is a puppy”. (The sweetly good).
5. Have you ever seen a grown woman play hide and seek in the dark with her children and husband? Picture a pitch black house and flashlights. A two year old running around like a champion and not caring about the dark at all. And then picture me wandering into the dark living room and seeing an arm sticking out from behind the chair and screaming like a terrified child. And then picture Ewan laughing so hard he nearly wet his pants. And then picture the two year old asking us if we were laughing or crying. (The embarrasingly bad).
6. Rachel loves animals. She really tries to nurture them and care for them. And sometimes hugs them a little too hard, but means well. The other day Rachel saw geese in the park and asked them if they were hungry. And if they’d maybe like some of her cheese….(The good).
And because we haven’t posted pictures of the girls in a long time – here’s Rachel having a quiet moment watching the birds. And Sarah Elizabeth and I rocking out on the merry-go-round.
Happy Sunday!
