Star Wars. It was the bane of my existence. I loathed it. Hated it. Wanted to burn every VHS tape in a 10 mile radius. It just wasn’t my thing. On one of the very first dates I went on with Ewan he professed his undying love for everything Star Wars. And my stomach sank. But I smiled and agreed to a series marathon just because I was too shy to tell him how I really felt. Prepared with popcorn and blankets, I fully intended just to sleep through it all. The first one was horrible. The second one was not quite as bad. And by the third one I was actually kind of into it. I couldn’t believe that I was sort of enjoying these movies I had plotted evil against. I realized that day that I must really love Ewan to be able to watch 6 Star Wars movies in a row…
Early in their relationship Joe asked Katherine if she liked camping. Yes she did, she told him, based on her memories of camping as a child. Driving to the campsite, setting up a cozy tent, washrooms only feet away and running water. Laughing, Joe called her adventures “Holiday Inn camping” and promised to show her the true experience the following summer. Wanting to impress him, Katherine thought it was a great idea and planned well in advance to prepare herself for the trip. She was going to be a model camper. Finally the day came and they had everything ready to go and they set out on their way. Secretly ridiculously nervous, Katherine did everything she could to seem calm. She wanted Joe to know that this ‘city girl’ could cut it in nature without makeup, a washroom and an hour in front of a mirror to get ready. She could do it. But after a few hours of canoeing and portaging, they realized that the map had grossly underestimated the length of their travels. Tired and achy, she didn’t want to whine about how much she just wanted to sleep and tried to keep smiling. With dirt on her face, under her nails, burrs from head to toe and sticks in her hair, she looked down at herself and laughed. At that moment she knew that Joe was different from anyone she’d ever met. If she had crawled up dirt hills, braved snakes and bears, this guy must be special to her. She must really love him. And he most definitely was the one.
