As he stood in front of her parents the only thing he could think to say was : “I think your daughter is perfect”. And as her mother and father stared back at their future in son-in-law the only thing they could do was laugh. It had been so sweet, so beautiful, so honest that there were no words to say back to such a statement. Only happy laughter…and of course their full support….
He had it all planned out. Down to a t. Except when he asked Lisa to go look at the stars that night she insisted that it was too overcast and that they should stay home instead. With some pushing and persistence, Jon convinced her that the skies would clear and that it was the perfect night to go to the beach. As the bells went off in her head, Lisa thought it was a little odd that he was so interested in watching the stars. Maybe this was it. Maybe this was the night he was going to ask her to marry him. Maybe she should put on some mascara and lipstick just in case. She was prepared if he was.
As they drove the winding road to Port Stanley she saw her favourite ice cream shop coming up ahead of them and suggested that they stop for a treat. Jon kept driving. Didn’t even acknowledge the request. Didn’t even hear her. He was so focused on where he was headed and could only think about one thing : asking Lisa to spend her life with him. And Lisa could only pout to herself that Jon was ignoring her. She was starting to think that she’d put on lipstick for nothing. When they pulled up to the beach a bonfire was off in the distance and they headed towards it. She nearly stopped in her tracks when she saw what was laying before her. There in the sand were dozens of paper bags with candles in them spelling the words : “Lisa will you marry me?” Having watched the set up earlier in the day, the neighbouring cottagers wanted to help to make things special too and had prepared music to play over their outdoor speakers. As romantic songs filled the air, Jon and Lisa spent the evening laying on a blanket, drinking wine and dreaming of their future together. And Lisa had to admit that this was definitely worth putting on lipstick for…
