JILLIAN AND MITCH – THE DAY…(photos by ewan)

A photo exists in our house of Ewan holding a Monopoly board up to the camera. He owned every single property on the board and had motels on each one. Every single bill from the banker’s box was in front of him and I had nothing. Not a single one dollar bill. Not a single house. Not a single piece of property. I was destitute. I think I was actually even in debt four dollars and insisted that the only reason he won was because it was his birthday and I ‘let‘ him win. There was no way I would admit that he won out of pure luck, or genius or skill. No, it was because it was his birthday that he won and the dice were stacked against me. Being the competitive man that he is, Ewan insisted that I take a picture of his colossal defeat. His slaughter of Park Place and Shortline Railroad. And only seconds after the picture was snapped the board was somehow ‘accidentally’ knocked out of his hand and I tried to run away with the camera. To say that Ewan and I are competitive might just be the understatement of the century…

She was on a hockey scholarship. He was on a soccer scholarship. Their intense need to win was innate in each of them before they even met. But that night he walked into the lounge and they struck up a conversation, they hit it off. Mitch asked a dozen questions about hockey and Jillian realized that he knew nothing about it. The entire state of Delaware where he grew up only had 1 hockey arena to it’s name. Jillian, a through and through Canadian, was used to everyone being die hard hockey fans. Or at least where 99% of the population knew something about the game. But for Mitch it was something new. So Jillian printed off her match schedule and suggested that he stop by one of the games to learn a bit more and of course, to see her again too.

It was only a short matter of time before Mitch fell hard for hockey. And even harder for Jillian.  As she cheered for the Calgary Flames, he cheered harder for The San Jose Sharks. They played tennis together and nearly ran each other into the net. Just about any sport they could find, they challenged each other to see who was the very best. On the day of the wedding there was a competition to see who was better at taking photos and they may have even taken a poll with the guests to see who had a better speech.  Only three months before the wedding, Jillian’s mother lost her battle with cancer. The games were put aside as they played on the same team through this, supporting each other and getting through such a difficult time. And any man who moves to another Country for his future wife is a good man in my books and deserves to win a round Monopoly at least once a year. Even if it is only because it’s his birthday :)
