1. Kids fall. A lot. It happens and we do our best as parents to make sure that we are always be there to pick them up when they do. But still they fall. A lot. The other night Rachel fell into the corner of the wall when she was chasing her sister like a maniac. Not hard. She didn’t even have a mark. But of course, like any child, she cried and came running to me. I hugged her like I always do and asked her where did she hurt herself so that I could kiss it better. Rachel kept going back to the corner of the wall and hitting it. I couldn’t understand what she was doing or what she was saying under the big crocidile tears. I kept asking, “Where did you hurt yourself?” and Rachel kept going to the corner. I finally understood. She was showing me on the wall where she had hurt herself. Not on her body, but on the wall. Poor kid couldn’t understand why I was laughing and hugging her so tight. (The sweetly Good).
2. This week Ewan and I went shopping. We have been both working hard since December and have lost enough weight to make us have to buy clothes that actually fit (read : we’ve lost 35 pounds between the two of us and have been craving chocolate every single minute while doing it). Now, Ewan is a great shopper. He always seems to enjoy himself. Or at least does a really good job pretending. And he does a great job of making sure I don’t come home with the entire store, or only black clothes. As we went into the 4th (maybe 10th) store I could see that Ewan was asleep at the wheel. His eyes were glazed over as if he had looked at all of these clothes a million times before. He was sitting on a chair in the changing room as I came out with another top on for him to say yeh or neh to. He didn’t say much about the top, but got really excited about the jeans. “Those jeans look really good babe!” To which I could only help but smile and explain, “Thanks. They’re the ones I came in with.” The only response he could muster: “oh!” Obviously done with shopping, we headed right home after that store. (The Good for me and Bad for Ewan).
3. Rachel is a funny character. Sometimes we can’t help but laugh at what she says. She is so dead pan serious when she says it and doesn’t even know that she’s making a joke. If you’re a parent, then you know that sometimes dinner time can be the best part of the day. Sometimes the worst. The nights when your kids eat everything you put in front of them without making a peep are the nights that dreams are made of. Rare and hard to come across, but perfection when they happen. Monday was one of these nights except when Rachel came to the green apple pieces that were on the corner of her plate. She looked at the apple pieces. Looked at us. Looked at the apple pieces and said, “I don’t like the green part. Toti, will you eat these for me?” Being the big softy that he is, Ewan picked up the apple. Before it even got to his lips, Rachel reached over and touched his hand and said : “No, Toti, you eat the green side and leave the rest for me.” Ewan couldn’t even hold it back. He burst out laughing and said, “So you want me to eat the peel and leave you the best part”? Rachel, confused by our laughter and completely serious said, “Yes, you eat the peel and I’ll eat the rest”. Oh Rachel. (The Good).
4. Sarah Elizabeth is a ham. She is cute and knows it. As she’s saying more and more words she is getting more and more excited. This week she mastered the word ‘duck’ and has been saying it non-stop. Around the clock. To anything the moves or breathes. She calls us ducks. She calls the cats ducks. She calls strangers ducks. Everything this week was a feathered bird. Last night we were reading a book about animals before bedtime and looked at pictures of horses and cows and pigs. When I turned the page, Sarah Elizabeth squealed. Clapped. And generally freaked out a little bit. She pointed at the picture and so very, very proud of herself pointed at the picture and screamed “DUCK!” There on the page were two little white ducks and she couldn’t help but just say it over and over again. Our sweet little girl had been talking about ducks all week and finally got to share the excitement with us over her new word. (The sweetly good).
5. Bath time is one of Ewan’s favourite parts of the night. It the quietest part of the night. The simplest. The only one where the girls are actually sitting in one place for more than 30 seconds. He has some fancy trick where he can make more bubbles in the bath by one little squirt of bubble bath than I can with the whole bottle. I still can’t figure it out. But bath time is a favourite here. As I was cleaning up dinner the other night I could hear them playing ‘Chef’ and making bubble soup and bubble cakes. Ewan was telling them about how I had a hair appointment in the morning and asked Rachel if she wanted to get her hair cut too. Playing Chef pretty quickly turned into playing hair dresser. And when I walked in to see how the games were going, Rachel was busy washing and styling her little sister’s hair. Rachel looked right up at me and said “I’m being a good big sister taking care of Sarah. When she gets older she can wash my hair.” My heart melted right then and there. (The sweetly Good).
5. Today was a proud day in Rachel’s life. She came running into our room and exclaimed, “I put my clothes on all by myself!” She couldn’t have been more proud of herself. And to be honest I don’t think we could have been either. (The Good).
6. WPPI. We can’t wait for it! If you’re going to be attending the conference this week, we’d love to meet up with you. Give a high five. Handshake. Hug. Share a drink. Or a dessert. Or two. Or three. Please send us a note, give us a call or wave us over if you want to connect. We can’t wait to meet old friends and make new ones. And I have some pretty cute new shoes that I can’t wait to share too :) (The blog).
