Sometimes it’s better to just speak up. And sometimes great things come from staying quiet…
It was early in their relationship. After only dating for a few months, Tanya and Dylan went on a skiing trip with some friends. Tanya was less than looking forward to the trip. Deathly afraid of heights or any activity that would have her traveling faster than her own legs could take her, skiing was not something she was looking forward to. But she knew how much Dylan enjoyed it, so went along and worried about the trip in silence.
The first night they graced the bunny hill with their presence the entire time. Dylan, being a seasoned pro wasn’t quite as fond of the magic carpet and four second descent down the hill and kept encouraging Tanya to try something a little more advanced. And so she went along. But as they neared the ski lift, her fear of heights kicked in, along with her embarrassment, and the tears started. Tanya began to cry. And cry. And cry. For 45 minutes at the base of the chair lift she cried in fear of going up. As three year olds blew past and rode the lift squealing with delight, she cowered. But Dylan was patient. He held her hand and comforted her. Assured her she could do it and that he would protect her. Finally Tanya thought she could do it and closed her eyes while the lift came around and they jumped on. The entire way up the hill she kept her eyes closed. And cried. And cried. And cried. But Dylan kept comforting her and promised he’d tell her when to jump off. As she held on for dear life, the chair lift came to the top of the hill and Dylan yelled : “jump”! Except she didn’t. Tanya stayed firmly planted on the ski lift, with her eyes shut and tears streaming down her face. And the chair lift kept going. And going. As it circled around, Dylan screamed at the operator to stop and she was eventually planted safely on the ground.
She hadn’t been looking forward to the trip. The heights. Or the skiing. But she knew that she would have fun spending time with Dylan and kept her worries to herself. It was only when she had to face her fears with him that she realized just how lucky she was. Dylan had been patient. And caring. And loving. And had helped her through a scary experience. He had been her knight in shining armor. And while she may have conquered the ski lift, getting back down the hill didn’t go quite as well. But hand in hand, they got through it together and Tanya admitted that she was more of a Chalet girl and that suited Dylan just fine :)
