Leading up to the wedding, Kelly couldn’t stop thinking about his speech. The words were written. Maybe even memorized. But he just wasn’t sure he could do it. Every so often, he would pull the folded paper from his wallet and open it carefully. Slowly. As if to not spill the words that he had carefully written on the page. And every time he tried to practice his speech, the words he wanted to say to his new wife, he couldn’t. Because a) he was pretty certain he would cry. And b) That just wasn’t going to happen.
So the night came and went, and Kelly never did read his speech out loud to Crystal. But two weeks after the wedding as they were getting ready for bed, Kelly started reading. And it went something like this :
“Never did I think that 16 years ago I would be meeting my bride-to-be for the first time. It is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. And I’m sure glad I made a great first impression by wearing jogging pants every single day.
I first met Crystal in grade 6 when we went to the same school together for three whole precious months. She was the new girl. And she was pretty! That’s all I can remember about her from back then, but I do remember saying I was going to marry her one day. Just kidding (not really!) Many years passed until our paths crossed again and we met for coffee. We had a great time and kept the date going longer and it just felt right.
Crystal, I love you more than ever and I promise I will never let you down. I promise that I will love you for every minute of every day and that I won’t sleep at night until I have told you how much I love you. I hope I make you as happy every day as you make me”. – Kelly
The words may not have been in front of hundreds of guests. They were shared just between the two of them. During a quiet moment. And Crystal knew that she loved this man more than anything. More than her favourite pair of shoes. And that’s saying a lot, since she really loves those shoes :)
Crystal and Kelly, thank you so much for an amazing day. You were up for anything and were even excited about taking photos in an ice cold meat freezer. Everything about the day was fun and we can’t wait to see you again soon.
