Sometimes being patient is hard. But it’s always worth it in the end…
After five years, Alicia had a sneaking suspicion that a proposal was coming. As their trip to Mexico grew closer, Kevin started acting strange. Disappearing at random hours, leaving work early, not answering her phone calls and locking his keys in the car. He was either working for the CIA or working on the proposal. And as they headed to the airport, Kevin wouldn’t let the bags or the passports out of his site. Again, either the ring was hidden in the bags or secret documents for the CIA. But Alicia was hoping for the first option.
As the days passed of their vacation, Alicia tried not to get her hopes up, but kept thinking that every romantic gesture might be ‘it‘. With each passing day, she got a little bit more sad and worried that her instincts were wrong. Long walks on the beach, fancy dinners and talks about their future. But still no ring. On the last night, over a romantic Italian dinner and red wine, Kevin still hadn’t asked Alicia to marry him. When a photographer came around to the table and asked if they would like their picture taken, she started to get excited and nervous and hopeful. But still no ring. And instead of taking a walk after eating as they had all week, Kevin just wanted to go back to their room and rest. As Alicia hurried into the bathroom of their room it took everything she had not to cry. She choked back tears and wondered why Kevin didn’t want to marry her. And she tried not to sob. Narrowly succeeding.
But out in their room Kevin was waiting patiently. When she came out of the bathroom, he took her hand and led her down to the beach. Alicia, hopes long gone of a proposal, was no long expecting it. But there, on a beautiful beach in Mexico they stood on a pavilion overlooking the splashing waves and the lights of the resort. And Kevin got down on one knee. And asked Alicia to be his wife.
It hadn’t been the first day. Or the second day. Or even the third. It was the very last night of their vacation. She was certain at that point that a proposal wasn’t coming, but Kevin knew exactly what he had been doing all along. He knew that waiting would be hard. But it had been worth the wait in the end.
