A road separated them. Cities. Miles. Over the years it had been both long and short. There had always been road trips on weekends and visits back and forth. But after 3.5 years, it was time for that to change.
Michelle and Mike spent every minute together that they could. On weekends they would race back to each other and be inseparable the entire time. Staying at his mom’s house or her parent’s house, they always had an open invitation with their families, but they didn’t have a place to call theirs. They didn’t have a place to call home together. And so Mike bought a condo in London and they set off to make it their own. After four days of sanding, painting, repairs and redecorating, things were starting to take shape. With no furniture, no towels, no bed and no food, it wasn’t exactly liveable just yet. But as the renos rolled into Valentine’s Day they couldn’t bear the thought of being anywhere else that night. It seemed like the perfect time to spend their first night together in their new place.
But a condo without furniture, towels, a bed or food causes a bit of a dilemma. So armed with a blowup bed and blow up pillows they got creative. With no blankets around, they made up the bed with the drop clothes they had used for painting. As their parents tried to politely encourage them that the condo wasn’t exactly ready just yet, Michelle and Mike knew better. As long as they had each other it would be the best Valentine’s Day ever. They grabbed a bottle of wine and shared some chocolate covered strawberries and sat together in the middle of the empty floor. Smiling. And laughing. And talking for hours. No furniture. Just them. And did I forget to mention no heat? Yes, no heat. But it didn’t matter. That night as they huddled under their drop cloth, Mike wrapped his arms around Michelle and held her tightly. They both knew that this had been the right choice. They both knew that moving in together was the perfect next step together. And they both knew that this was exactly where they belonged.
