His invitation had been for a ‘nice dinner’. She immediately knew something was up. Should she dress up? Should she do her hair? Was makeup required? She asked a million questions because she wanted to make sure that she looked perfect. After all, a ‘nice’ dinner made her think that something special was coming. Rob quickly brushed off Erin’s questions and said it wasn’t anything special, he just felt like cooking for her. But as the days went on all Erin could think about was the special dinner and images of a ring kept dancing through her mind.
When the day came she was sicker than a dog. Sicker than a sick dog. It was the first time she’d ever had to call in sick to work. It was that bad. When Rob called to ask if she was ready for his special cooking, Erin realized that she had completely forgotten. She had been too busy having a date with Kleenex, flu pills and Nyquil that she hadn’t remembered her date with Rob. Getting up and dressed was the last she wanted to do. But knowing how excited Rob was and thinking that just maybe the dinner was going to be special after all, she mustered up the strength to put on something a bit more fashionable than her pjs and brushed her teeth.
Arriving at Rob’s, she was greeted with a kitchen that looked like a bomb had gone off. There were pots and pans stacked two feet high and he had been in the kitchen since the wee hours of the morning. Trying not to pass from exhaustion, she propped herself against the counter and smiled. She didn’t want him to see how sick she was. As he led her out to the patio, candles filled the space, surrounding a table set for a feast under the stars. Excusing himself to get some more wine, Rob returned with a golden key. Attached it was a note that said ‘not only do I want to build my home with you…I want to build the rest of my life with you’. And then came the tears. Lots and lots of tears. Through the sniffles and the sobs and squeals of excitement, Erin managed to say yes. She forgot all about how sick she was and couldn’t stop from telling Rob over and over again how special the night had been. It had been more than just a nice dinner. It had been the perfect dinner…
