I’m not going to lie, Ewan and I don’t always see eye to eye on music. I have been known to like ‘chick music’. Katie Perry, Ingrid Michelson, Jack Johnson, Justin Timerblake. Anything that has a good ‘ooohh yeeaaah’ kind of line that I can sing out loud at the top of my lungs. And shimmy around the kitchen like I’m a backup dancer for Madonna. That’s my kind of music. And then there’s Ewan. His play list consists of Al Green, Chuck Barry and Matt and Kim. While tolerable, I just can’t wait for the sweet return of my girlie tunes. We just don’t always see eye to eye about music.
But there a few songs that we both love. There’s no rhyme or reason behind them. There’s no connection of artists or types of music. There are just some songs that have special meaning to us that we can’t help but hum along to when we hear them. When we first started dating I was really into Michelle Branch (I’m hanging my head in shame a little bit right now). I may have played the same 14 songs on repeat over and over again. And Ewan may have wanted to jab pencils into his ears the entire time. But whenever we hear it on the radio we both smile and laugh remembering that year in residence. Or when we hear Everclear “The Good Witch of the North” we just have to stop what we’re doing to sing along. Yes, I realize sometimes this might be in the middle of our office with staff around, but they’re somewhat used to our craziness by now. And when we drove our girls home from the hospital we associate the song that was playing on the radio with both of those trips. Music defines such important memories we’ve had together that sometimes it doesn’t matter if it’s Motown or angry girl music. It reminds of us of where we’ve been and can’t help but smile.
For Shannon and Mike there was no question about what their first dance would be together at their wedding. They grew up together in a small town way up North, but their first memory of the other wasn’t until grade 7. Shannon was extroverted. Outgoing. And vocal. Mike was quiet and timid. Shy. The world moved forward without them noticing each other too much. It wasn’t until Shannon was searching facebook many years later that she stumbled across his face and recognized his smile. Both being from a small town, she was certain they’d have something to talk about. And they most definitely did. Way back when in the same class, a new song had made it’s way to the radio and was at its height of popularity. It defined who they were as teenagers. It made them remember exactly who they had been and love exactly who the other person was now. That song reminded them of the first time they met. So as they danced together on their wedding day, the both held each other tightly. They smiled and hummed along quietly as they were surrounded by their closest friends and family. And if you listened very carefully, you’d be able to hear them singing : “And love is all that I need/ And I found it there in your heart/ It isn’t too hard to see/ We’re in heaven”…..
