Hello Sunday. You seemed to take forever to get here this week. I really wish you could stay longer. Monday morning isn’t nearly as pretty as you are…
1. I am horrified. Officially thinking of throwing out our cell phone or changing the number. Today I had to attend an event for a few hours and Ewan stayed home with the girls. I had four people bring me a glass of punch. Two people bring me a glass of water. And a nice little old lady bring me a cup of tea. To say that I really had to pee would be an understatement. I finally got a minute to run to the bathroom and quickly checked the messages on our phone as I hurried down the hallway. As I reached the door I hung up the phone and slipped it back in my purse. Or so I thought I had hung it up. I must have accidentally hit ‘return last call’ because after I flushed the toilet I could hear talking coming from my purse. Confused, I riffled through my bag and realized it was my phone. I held it up to my ear just in time to hear : “If you have finished your recording please hang up or press pound for more options”. I could have died right then and there. (The horribly embarrassingly bad).
2. As a special treat we took the kids to a McDonald’s play place (please don’t go, it’s pink eye in a test tube) and got a happy meal. An Avatar toy came with it that lit up blue when you activated it. We thought you squeezed it’s belly to make it light up because that’s what we did the first few times while we chatted over french fries. Then it stopped working. No matter of squeezing could make it work again. So I yelled at it. And it lit up. I squealed. And tried to squeeze it again with no luck. So I yelled again. And it lit up again. As I squealed in delight (as our children watched me in embarrassment) it flickered brighter and brighter. Thanks to someone for pointing out to me that it was actually voice activated and lit up when you spoke to it. Not when you squeezed it like a moron and just happened to be talking at the same time. (The embarrassingly bad).
3. Our nanny Baillie is pregnant. We can’t wait to meet her little boy or girl that is going to come this summer and the kids are just as excited. When asking Rachel this week if she was excited to meet the new baby, she responded to Ewan’s horror: “Yes. Baillie has a baby in her belly. I want a baby in my belly.” Ewan quickly responded, “No sweetie, you don’t want a baby in your belly. NOT for a VERY long time.” Rachel, confused by this statement stared at her father, until finally she exclaimed, “I do want a baby in my belly. Put Sarah Elizabeth in there now please.” (The sweetly bad for Ewan).
4. Rachel loves our cat Salty (we didn’t give him that name, we got him with it already attached). She can’t get enough of him. Every single time we leave the house, she hugs him and kisses him as though it’s their last parting. And the minute we get home she runs to find him and tells him all about our travels. She’s picked up that Ewan never calls him Salty (because he hates the name) and always calls him Buddy. She thinks that’s his new name. And we’ve been trying to teach Rachel to spell her full name this week, so she now calls herself Rachel Phelan. Earlier this week, Rachel had a time out. She had to go sit on her bed until she could come an apologize to her little sister. The entire time she sat on her bed she cried out for that darn cat. I’m pretty sure she was convinced she would never see him again. So the cries started “Buddy”. “Buddddy”. And then she called out “Buddy Phelan! BUDDY PHELAN! I miss you! Come Buddy. Come.” To our surprise, the cat walked into her room and jumped on her bed. When we went in to check on her. There she was, huge cat on her lap. Holding him like a doll, laughing, “Buddy Phelan loves me!” (The sweetly Good).
5. Sometimes Rachel knows she’s being silly and funny. And sometimes she has no clue why the things that come out of her mouth entertain us. Nana bought her the movie “Up” this week and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should. It will make your heart sad and happy all at the same time. Rachel has been carrying it around like a prized possession all week. She keeps bringing it to us, holding up the DVD and then turning it upside down asking “Can I please watch Down”?! The poor girl can’t understand why we keep laughing so hard. (The good).
6. We thought Rachel was the trouble maker. The sneaky one. The one we would have to keep an eye on. But as Sarah Elizabeth gets older we’re learning that’s not the case. We’re learning that she’s the one that we will have to keep an eye on. With her devilish little smile and her big beautiful blue eyes she melts the heart of anyone who meets her and she knows it. This week, we were introduced to the sneaky crumb eater. If you have kids, you know. They hide things. They hide toys. They hide cups. They hide old diapers. You name it, it will go missing and disappear into the great abyss of nothingness. So it’s no surprise that food sometimes ends up in mystery places too. Sarah Elizabeth has become that hider. She hides her food to be found later and when you catch her, she doesn’t give you the chance to stop her. There she sat reaching under the couch for something that seemed to be just out of her reach. Ewan, wondering what she was up to got down on the floor to see. Their eyes met. Sarah Elizabeth’s eyes darted back under the couch. She looked back at her father. Gave him a sly smile and quickly jammed her hand back under the couch. Before Ewan could grab it, it was gone. The hidden Fruit Loop had been shoved in her mouth with nothing but a giant grin staring back at us. It looks like we have to keep an eye on both of them now :) (The Good and The Bad).
7. The kids are always interested in what Ewan is doing when he is exercising. They watch with big eyes and Rachel always wants a play by play of “What are you doing now?” But after his last workout (two in one day thanks to our friend Zak Schwank) Sarah Elizabeth quickly crawled over, got into the position Ewan was just in and tried to mimic the workout. If you have ever watched a one year old try to do push ups you’ll quickly find yourself looking for the video camera to submit it to America’s Funniest Home videos. Oh, and peeing your pants! (The Good).
8. Thank you to Sylvana from The Professional Bridesmaid for featuring Jessica and Nick’s Friday the 13th wedding on her blog this week. Make sure to check out her site for the latest awesome wedding posts and locations of wedding gown trunk sales. Thanks Sylvana! (The blog).
