We’ve always supported each other. That’s just the way we work. Sometimes it’s big things and sometimes it’s little tiny things that no one else would even think about. But for Ewan and I, our love is a little give and take…
When I’m sick Ewan holds my hand, even though he’s a bit of a germ-aphobe and really hates that the sick bugs are secretly crawling all over him. But it’s what I need for comfort. When we started the business, I worked full time to support his dreams and help him achieve them. My feet hurt, I worked late hours and I was tired, but it was what he needed. I hate True Blood, but watch it just for him. He hates Desperate Housewives, but knows it makes me all giddy inside. He likes salty. I like sweet. So we eat chocolate covered pretzels. He likes to stay up late and get up early. I like to go to bed early and sleep in late. So we go to bed late and get up early. He takes out the trash because I hate doing it. And I change the cat litter because he dry heaves if he goes near it. Yes, sometimes we do things we wish we didn’t have to, or that aren’t easy or that make us grumble, but it’s what works for us. Our love has always been the perfect mix of give and take.
For Erin and Reg, their give and take has been a bit more than germy hands and bad sitcoms. They met on the first day of grade nine, but took an entire year to start dating. A year later Reg had to move, when he was picked up by the OHL. The phone bills were high, the emails were long and the visits were as frequent as possible. Just when they thought the long distance relationship couldn’t get any harder, Reg was drafted to play for the Greyhounds and the few cities that had separated them suddenly grew into hundreds of miles. The phone bills grew larger, the emails even longer, but visits less frequent and never quite long enough.
After five years in different cities, their love was still growing strong. Nothing could stop them, not even distance. They couldn’t see each other as often as they’d like. And they counted the days until the could see each other again. Although hard, it worked for them. It just clicked. But when Erin was accepted to teacher’s college in Australia they had to make a decision. A few hundred miles was one thing, but crossing an Ocean was another. And so they boarded the plane together hand in hand. There would be no more long distance phone calls. There would be no more sleeping alone at night. It would be a change. It would be some give and take. It would be far from their friends and family. But it was where they belonged and they both knew it. And only seven days after landing in this new place together, Reg asked Erin to spend the rest of her life with him. The give and take had all been worth it…
