ERICA AND BRAD – THE DAY… (photos by yaira)

He says that he knew she was the one for him . From the very moment they met, he was certain that this was the girl he belonged with. Wanted to spend his life with. Wanted to grow old with. She was the one for him…

The first time they met was in their first year of University. Erica was visiting friends on campus and was introduced to Brad. She heard from friends that he was interested in her, but wasn’t quite sure what to think just yet. As time went on, they talked, they got to know each other and they grew close. One day she suddenly realized that maybe she liked him too. No, she definitely liked him. Wanted to grow old with him. Knew that he was the one for her…

Erica and Brad, from the first minute I met you I could see this love that you feel for each other. You laugh and smile and cuddle together so effortlessly and it’s beautiful to watch. The whole world can see what you both know – that you’re meant to be together. Thank you so much for inviting us to be part of your special day and for sharing this love so openly. You two remind me why we love what we do :)

JEN AND JOEY – THE LIFE… (photos by ewan)

On the Friday morning, she just had a feeling. She was certain she was pregnant and had to take a test. It didn’t matter that it was 5am. It didn’t matter that she really should still be sleeping. She just couldn’t ignore that feeling any longer. Jen went into the bathroom and took out the test that she had stashed away for this very moment. She looked at it and pictured all of the moments that could be in their near future. Being pregnant, bringing the baby home from the hospital, first words and first steps. She could see their future. But as she waited for the results, nothing happened. No positive. No negative. Just nothing. Too tired and early to drive to the pharmacy, she climbed back into bed and fell asleep dreaming of babies…

The next morning Jen and Joey had plans and weren’t able to get another test. It would just have to wait. But the entire day their thoughts were consumed with wondering. And to make matters worse, that night they were having dinner with friends who had just had a new born baby. All of the baby talk was enough to purely torture them. And that night on the way home, the pharmacy was closed. It would still have to wait.

The following morning they couldn’t take it anymore. They were going crazy and just had to know. After a quick drive to the pharmacy, they had their answer : Positive. Cheers, excitement and happiness flooded over them. Joey and Jen had their answer and it was exactly what they had hoped for. Waited so patiently for. Had always hoped for. They were expecting a baby and were going to get to experience being pregnant, bringing the baby home from the hospital, first words and first steps. They were ready for the future….

Now if you’ve skipped ahead to the images, you might recognize Joey from some photos Ewan took of him earlier this year. Joey and Jen are our good friends and are also the owners of Joey Kittmer Photography. And those obnoxious friends who wouldn’t stop talking about their new baby were Ewan and I. I think we gave Joey and Jen a minute-by-minute account of Sarah Elizabeth’s every movement that day. Come on, don’t hate us, we were excited to be new parents again! But not yet having an answer, Joey and Jen just kept saying that they weren’t pregnant yet, but would be excited when it happened. Jen, I can’t believe that you sat through that entire dinner without throwing a plate at my head! If I had known that you were waiting on an answer, I would have driven you right then and there to a pharmacy myself. We are beyond excited to meet the twins, but tell them to keep cooking a little bit longer still. We love you both and look forward to the first dinner where we get to hear the minute-by-minute stories of the twin’s day :)

JAYNE AND ROB – THE DAY…(photos by ewan)

She loved surprises and Rob knew it. She couldn’t help but get excited and jump up and down like a small child in a candy shop when one was in the air. She would wave her arms and hide her face when really excited. She loved surprises and he knew that it was the perfect way to propose.

On a Wednesday morning Jayne reminded Rob that she was having drinks with some friends that night after work, but that she wouldn’t be late. Rob said that he was meeting an out-of-town client that day anyways, and that he looked forward to seeing her that night. And to make the day even better, he promised a surprise for her when she got home. She couldn’t wait. She thought about it all day long and got excited whenever it crossed her mind. Jayne loves surprises.

When she arrived home that night, Rob met her at the door wearing a suit. A little bit odd, but she didn’t think much about it. Maybe he just ran late meeting his client and hadn’t had a chance to change yet. After all, the client meeting was out of town. The next thing she noticed was that Rob had a horrible nose bleed, so she immediately forgot all about the suit. Jayne tried to suggest that he should lay down. Then she insisted. And then she pleaded. She just wanted him to get better, but all Rob could do was pace back and forth around the condo. After Jayne finally got him to lay down, he reminded Jayne of the surprise and pointed to a beautiful blue box wrapped with a perfect white ribbon. Excited, she tried to bring the box over to the couch to open it beside Rob. He let out an insistent “NO”, but she had no clue why. He wanted her to open it right where she was standing for some reason. She wasn’t quite sure of his reasoning, but wasn’t going to argue. A surprise is a surprise after all.

As she opened the box, there was another smaller equally beautiful box inside. As she opened it, she was greeted with a perfect black ring box. See above for Jayne’s love of surprises and her normal reaction with excitement. Immediately, her hands starting flying, she covered her face and got excited like a little kid in a candy store. She said yes before she even remembered to open the box.

After the excitement, Rob told her that he had wanted her to stay where she was so that he could get down properly on one knee in front of her. And the client that he had to meet out of town was actually her parents. He had driven the 2.5 hours (each way) to ask Jayne’s parents for their blessing before he gave Jayne her big surprise. And the surprise had been just that, a complete surprise. Not once did Jayne suspect that a proposal was coming, but it was the best surprise she could have ever asked for.

Jayne and Rob, it is always so awesome to be part of a couple’s special day who we’ve met somewhere else in the past. We loved you even back at Erin and Kevin’s wedding in 2006 and were super excited to see you (and the beautifully pregnant Erin and proud daddy-to-be Kevin) again. We really hope you’ll stay in touch and that we’ll see you again soon :)

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE BLOG (21) – OUR LIFE…

So I normally share 6 or 7 little stories from our week that are either good, bad or just blog worthy. For 21 weeks now, I’ve been jotting down notes as the week passes along and laughing at the strange and weird things that happen at the Phelan house. This week I have a little list of 7 funny stories, but the first one just makes all of the others pale in comparison. I have tried to write this post 3 times now and the other 6 just can’t live up. If you have a weak stomach I suggest you stop reading now. Right here. Don’t go any further. If you’re up for the challenge, keep reading to learn about the exact moment where I realized that not many things in the world can phase a mother…

We’re in the middle of potty training. Rachel just recently turned 2, but the experience has been pretty positive for the most part. Until this week. We made the journey to the beach with Aunt Kelly and Uncle Rob to let the girls swim in the lake and play in the sand. Rachel insisted that she didn’t need to wear a diaper and promised me that she’d tell me if she needed to use the potty. When we tried to go into the public bathroom she started to cry that they were scary. I don’t blame her, they really were scary. I didn’t press her on it and asked if she wanted to put on a diaper. She told me she didn’t have to go anymore. My mistake.

After playing in the water, running through the sand and having a great day, she asked to go play on the slides. She promised me again that she didn’t have to go the bathroom and that she was ready for the big-girl slide. After proudly climbing up the stairs, Rachel stood at the top of the slide ready to tackle it. All of the sudden, in the middle of the crowded equipment she stopped. Our eyes met and hers were filled with panic. She squatted and opened her mouth. Out came a little, ‘oh no‘. And then my mouth opened and out came a big ‘OH NO‘. In her bathing suit with no diaper on, Rachel pooped. A whole lot. As Rachel stood confused at the top of the slide, my immediate thoughts went to the fact that I couldn’t let her actually go down the slide or we’d have even more of a mess to clean up. I scrambled up the stairs, grabbed her and ran. Ran as fast as I could towards the bathrooms.

But remember that she was petrified of the public bathrooms and was now embarrassed and there was no way that I could get her to go inside. The mom inside of me was so sad for our little girl and I just wanted to comfort her and tell her that accidents happen. But the other side of me was dying to laugh out loud. Ewan was dry heaving at this point. He was out of commission. So there I was standing with Rachel and the only thing I could think of was to hose her off in the showers. I went over to the private shower stall and tried my best to peel the bathing suit off and get her under the water. Little did I know that the shower head was broken and the water came blasting out so fast that it shot the mess off of Rachel’s little body all the way out of the private stall into the middle of the shower room. At this point two young boys walked into the public shower space and noticed the mess. They called for their mom that a dog must have pooped in the showers and to come quick. I think my heart stopped at that moment. I finished washing off Rachel who thought the whole experience was now funny and she just kept calling out loud, “A dog pooed in the shower”. At that point I just couldn’t help but laugh.

In that moment, I realized that not many things can phase a mother. And I wondered when it became normal for these things to happen to me. So, this week I want thank Rachel for keeping life interesting. Keeping life fun and reminding me that the small things make the world go around. I love you Rachel and here’s to hoping that potty training goes a little bit better next week :)

russell - Oh Dear God! it takes EVERYTHING in me to clean up after our friends dog when we “babysit”. I don’t know how you could have made it through this. And Ewan, I would have been right next to you dry heaving for all it was worth! Once again, an everyday occurrence in the Phelan household, but to the rest, it is soooo amusing! Thank you!
