SABEENA AND MARCEL (AND THE NINJETTE) – THE LIFE…

We knew both of our girl’s personalities before we knew their faces. We knew that Rachel was a little spitfire and was going to come into the world with her own agenda, own mind and own poking stick to make the world do exactly as she wanted. Sarah Elizabeth, on the other hand, rolled around happily, gave me gentle kicks and was pretty laid back. So, when Rachel was born 5 weeks early (on her own agenda), we weren’t the least bit surprised. And when Sarah Elizabeth was born and just calmly stared around the room taking it all in, it was also no shock to us. Our girls had a way of letting us know who they were before they even arrived.

We first met Sabeena and Marcel two years ago when we photographed their wedding on a very very hot summer day. It was no secret, even then, that they wanted kids. When their friends and family found out that they were expecting, they quickly named the baby “The Ninja”. Aptly named because Marcel is half Chinese and because he had a mild obsession with Ninjas growing up (there were many Halloween’s spent dressed in full Ninja gear at the Tang residence). As the months passed, ‘The Ninja’s” true personality started to shine, as the karate chops were in no short supply and Sabeena’s belly would dance with the display of newly acquired martial arts skills.

On the day of the big ultrasound, it was just assumed that The Ninja was a little boy. Not one, not two, not even three…but 5 generations of Tang’s had been all men. History was making it pretty clear that Marcel’s family didn’t produce girls, so the family was already stocking up on blue onesies and cowboy hats. But history would be creating a new chapter for Marcel and Sabeena as the Ninja was, in fact, a Ninjette!

When Ewan and I found out that we were having girls, I cried both times. I’d always dreamed of little girls in frilly dresses and bows – I’m such a girlie girl like that. Marcel and Sabeena’s first reaction wasn’t tears, or hugs when The Ninjette made her appearance on the screen. Not normally a part of their show of affection for each other, but fitting at the time, they gave each other a huge high give when they found out. Yes, a high five, right there in the ultrasound lab. They’d accomplished great success in the eyes of the Tang family and the Ninjette is quite the little star already, being the first girl expected in over 5 decades.

Sabeena and Marcel, we feel so lucky to be able to document this next chapter in your life together. Sabeena, I know you’re praying for the baby to have Marcel’s beautiful eyes and your ability to shop all day long (both important qualities in my books!) We know that the Ninjette is going to be stunning and will hopefully have some wicked Ninja skills when she arrives next month. But hopefully the family will wait to pass along the nunchucks until she’s a little bit older!

Here’s to wishing you a healthy labour and the safe arrive of the little Ninjette!

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE BLOG (5) – OUR LIFE…

I know, I know, I’m really late with this post today – please don’t hate me. It’s been an interesting day that’s kept me away from the computer. But here it is Sunday again and time to think back about the week. I swear, you’re going to start thinking we have the educational level (and common sense) of 5 year olds with the things that we say and do. I’m blaming it on sleep deprivation!

1. When a two year old tells you they need to get out of the bathtub NOW to go the bathroom, don’t hesitate. I learned my lesson…(The bad).

2. Before we had kids, I liked to get dressed up every single day. These days I’m lucky if I actually manage to keep a shirt clean for ten minutes before a baby spits up on it. So, quite often you’ll find me roaming around the house in just a tank top and shorts. But in the wee hours of the morning (okay, to me 7am is still considered night time) I have to get up to feed Sarah Elizabeth. Since I sleep in the buff, I wander into the kitchen the same way. Yesterday morning, through my foggy haze of broken sleep, I was greeted by a smiling face outside the kitchen window – my 85 year old neighbour. I think it’s time to invest in kitchen blinds! (The very bad).

3. Our new found love, House, gave a shout out to London Ontario this week. I was beside myself! (The Good).

4. Ewan has been telling me for months that I need to go get my eyes tested, but I keep fighting it. I have an aversion to people poking things at my eyes and I’m the queen of procrastination. The other night when we were out for a walk I hollered quite loudly, “look at the size of that cat!!” The biggest cat that I’ve ever seen was about 200 yards away and I couldn’t get over how big it was. As we got closer, I was so excited to get a closer look at the world’s largest cat. All of the sudden the cat stood up and started running away. My giant cat was actually a child who had been squatting down to play with a dead bird. I made an eye appointment the next day! (The embarrasing-ly bad).

5. When Rachel is playing quietly for a little bit too long, I know that she’s up to no good. I was cooking dinner and she was on the other side of the island having a snack and playing with the cats. I noticed the sudden quiet in the room and rounded the island to find Rachel forcefully feeding the cat her goldfish crackers, with a mouthful of cat food. I guess all of my talking about sharing got through to her! (The oddly good).

6. Have you ever had a mysterious smell in your house that you couldn’t find? For three weeks I have been tearing cushions off the couch, opening toy boxes and hunting in every nook and cranny for ‘the smell’. On Friday morning Rachel told me that she found the present that she’d hidden for me three magical weeks ago. Wrapped in a doll’s dress, sitting in a box, hidden in the bottom drawer of her play kitchen was that special present. I learned a good science lesson that morning – milk left in a sippy cup, in a toy kitchen sitting next to the heating vent will not only curdle, separate and turn grey….it will also create the foulest smell that you’ll ever sniff in your life. And just in case you’re tempted to take the lid off the cup, think of curious ‘ol me dry heaving for five minutes while trying to get close enough to the cup again just to throw it out! (The bad).

7. I couldn’t resist sharing my etsy wedding finds this week. If you’re looking for some classy, unique items, check out these items : Tea stained origami tulips, The Priscilla penthouse clutch, the vintage birdcage veil, and a crystal plume. I am tempted to buy these thing just for my day to day life – yes I’m a little bit crazy like that! (The good).

Happy Sunday and have a great week!

- Brianna

April 2, 2009 - 2:43 pm

Brianna - Katie, I definitely did make an eye appointment. I swear the kid looked exactly like a cat. Maybe I can blame it on sleep deprivation from a new baby!

March 31, 2009 - 9:23 pm

Katie Slater - O. my. golly-gosh-o-gee. you are FUNNY! I was just laughing out loud for our similarities, our differences, but most of all the hilarity that is your eyesight! I can’t believe you thought a child was a cat! Have you called the eye doc yet? :)

March 31, 2009 - 1:54 pm

Imthiaz Houseman - oh wow, that’s so funny! I can only imagine your reaction when you didn’t get her out of the bath soon enough. one time is all that takes…trust me.

BODY LANGUAGE – THE NIGHT…

In the beginning he was clueless. He didn’t pick up on all of the subtle clues that she liked him. He didn’t notice when she twirled her hair when they talked, that she moved closer into him when they laughed or that she touched his wrist when she was telling him about her day. But who can blame him, he was too distracted by how gorgeous she was. He couldn’t even think straight, let alone notice that her body language was telling him everything he needed to know: “I like you, ask me out!”

Fast forward slightly and he has it all figured out. They have been dating for over a year and it is her turn to notice his unspoken language. They are sitting at dinner in their favourite restaurant. His hands are sweating and he can’t stop fidgeting. “When will dessert get here?” he keeps thinking and mumbles out loud. The perfect chocolate cake arrives, her favourite. A few bites in and she looks down to find the most wonderful surprise in her cake: a ring. Her eyes widen, he leans forward to whisper, “I love you and always will.” “Yes, Yes, YES.” Lots of tears, lots of kisses and happily ever after. Applause sounds all around them.

Now they have been married for three years and Naomi’s husband has come to think that he can read her completely. There is nothing she can do that he doesn’t understand. When she crosses her arms across her chest, he knows not to mess with her. Biting her bottom lip is a dead give-away that she’s nervous and the little swagger in her walk means that she’s feeling a little bit sexier than normal that day. Yes, he can read her like a book.

But Naomi wanted to write a new page in her book of surprises for her husband. And she went back to the first secret language that she used to tell him she liked him, that she loved him: body language. Naomi was the perfect person to use our new location for boudoir photos at a downtown London hotel. In the simple way she lifted her shoulder, tilted her head and looked at the camera, she spoke a thousand silent words of love for her husband.

——

A couple of months ago we moved our boudoir sessions to a downtown London hotel. We love it there! It has worked out great for bachelorette boudoir parties and we are now offering regular boudoir sessions there, as well. If you’d like more details on a session, send me a quick note and we look forward to working with you!

And enough of my babbling….we wanted to show you that body language can mean more than just a smile or a wink. The power of body language can be found even just in the way a woman stands or walks. So, here are some photos of Naomi expressing her body language…

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE – OUR LIFE…

Everyone has that book from when they were a child that they can’t wait to some day read to their children. For Ewan, that book is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and he gave it to Rachel for her first birthday. But for me, it is Where The Wild Things Are and I can not tell you how excited I was to come across this trailer for the new movie based on my favourite childhood book. I don’t know at what age kids start going to the movies, but I can’t wait to share this with Rachel (I think Sarah Elizabeth has at least a couple of years before she will start caring about movies) and I just had to share my excitement with our blog family too. I hope you enjoy this trailer as much as I did.
