RACHEL, IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY – OUR LIFE…

Birthday celebrations in our house begin exactly one week before the calendar actually says it’s official. And at bedtime the night before the actual date, we sing the Simpson’s song – “Lisa it’s your birthday” and we substitute the birthday person’s name in it. Yes, we’re losers, but we have fun!

Rachel, I can’t believe that you turned two today. It seems like just yesterday we were sitting in the NICU waiting anxiously for you to come home. We were so scared and your father watched over your little isolette like a bulldog. We sat with you 18 hours a day and forgot that sleep even existed. And look how far you’ve come now – you’re a little firecracker! I swear you’re going to be a star athlete or win a record for the highest amount of words spoken in one day.

You’re a big sister now and you’re so great at it. You are my little helper and Sarah Elizabeth loves you so much. She smiles the minute you walk (read: run crazily) into the room and gets excited when you sing and talk to her. She’s lucky to have you and we love every minute of watching the two of you grow up together.

Rachel, you and your sister are the loves of our lives. You make us smile, laugh and feel blessed every single day. The last two years have been filled with so many special memories and I’m already excited to celebrate again next year. Thanks to all of our couples, friends, family and blog-friends for their emails and happy birthday wishes to Rachel.

We just got the birthday princess to bed after a full day of partying and we’ll be posting a ‘year in pictures’ again in the next couple of days. In case you missed the first time we did this, you can see it here. Peek back after the weekend and we’ll have all sorts of birthday celebration photos to share (after we clean the cake from the curtains and find out who left their shoes behind at the party?!?!) But here are a few photos from today as a sneak preview. Rachel did NOT want her photo taken one bit (note the last photo) and fought us all day on it. And trying to get three kids into one photo together was enough to make me want a drink. But isn’t that what birthday parties are all about?!

Rachel, Happy Birthday, little girl. We love you so much.

When you go to sleep at night, I miss you and can’t wait for the morning so that I can hug you again.

- Love Mommy, Toti and Sarah Elizabeth

Sara - Adorable!!! These are great.

It’s been so amazing to see Rachel grow up over the past couple of years – something I have never been able to experience, being the youngest of three girls. I’m excited to see her (and Sarah Elizabeth too) continue to grow and learn everything for the first time…especially talking!
Thanks for letting me be part of the experience. :)

Hope you guys had a wonderful day, and that Rachel is tired enough for today to let you have a great sleep too…ha!

Thank you so much, for having us over to celebrate Rachel’s special day.

I am glad Rachel enjoyed her day – she truly is a princess.
I enjoyed my long overdue snuggle with Sarah Elizabeth ( who says I can’t eat with one hand AND hold a baby !?!?!)

We had a great time, and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
(I think we will take the blame for the cake on the curtains – must have been Greg – AND, yes, we left shoes there too !!!)

Love the picture of us, and the kids ….. Ryan mentioned he didn’t get the “promised chocolate” from Uncle EE. Next time.

Love you all. xo xo xo xo

ERIN AND REG – THE QUESTION…

Winter gets a bad rep. Everyone runs somewhere tropical the minute that the snow flies and they count down the days until the tulips blossom again. I think I’m an exception because I love winter!

I love the snow, I love winter coats, I love mittens and scarves and I love sitting in front of the fire place drinking some Bailey’s and listening to what we call “wine drinking music” (check out Damien Rice and Nizlopi). It doesn’t get much better than that.

Erin and Reg are fans of winter too and were really excited to have their engagement photos taken out in the snow. The first time we had a shoot scheduled, it was a -42 wind chill, so we re-scheduled for a couple of weeks later. No such luck, it was just as cold. But Erin and Reg were troopers and had a blast in the winter wonderland.

This post got me thinking about Winter and all of it’s wonderful-ness, so I couldn’t resist sharing the ten things I love most about our Winter months in Canada:

1. Blankets – everywhere. My favourite is a Rainbow Brite blanket from the 80’s that has faded to the point that you can’t even see the image anymore – it’s just white now.

2. The stinging in your lungs when you walk out in the cold and the crunching of the snow under my feet. I think if they made a sound track of that noise, I might just buy it.

3. The curves of the snow. The beautiful way it changes a landscape and erases the world beneath it.

4. Hot chocolate in a mug jammed with those little miniature marshmallows.

5. Crawling into bed, with freezing cold sheets and cuddling up to Ewan to warm up.

6. Winter storms and how they force us to stop and slow down. Plans get canceled, you can’t go out to run errands and you get to just sit back and enjoy the little things that we are all normally too busy for.

7. Sitting in a restaurant near a window and watching the snow fall outside while enjoying a warm meal inside.

8. Holding hands with mittens on.

9. Both of our daugthers and Ewan celebrate their birthdays in the winter, so there are lots of birthday cakes, balloons and presents.

10. Lighting 50 candles around the house (no kidding), turning off all of the lights and just spending the evening in the candlelight.

Happy Friday and I hope you’re enjoying the snow!

February 28, 2009 - 6:44 am

Christopher Winters - Winter is my favourite season too and it’s hard to find other people who feel the same way. One of my favourite things about it is driving around until I find a tree that is perfectly covered in snow to take photos of. These shots with the trees are perfect. I love the lines they create and the blanket of snow on them. Good stuff!

COUNTING THE DAYS – THE NIGHT…

The birds woke her before her alarm sounded. As she rolled over, she reached to embrace her husband and give him a kiss good morning. Her heart sank when her arm hit the cold, stiff pillow and she realized again that she was in bed alone. After four months, she still hadn’t gotten used to sleeping alone.

As she stumbled into the kitchen to make a pot of coffee, she remembered what today was and beamed. She quickly raced to the shower to get ready. She laid all of her beautiful new lingerie across the bed and touched the beautiful lace, satin and silk. She felt beautiful just looking at them. And she felt sexy and empowered as she rushed to continue getting ready.

C*’s husband had been gone for four months now and she missed him every minute of the day. He had been re-stationed overseas right after their wedding and she was counting the days until he returned home. They wrote back and forth, exchanged quick, “I love yous” when he called, but they missed each other terribly and she could tell that he really missed home.

But today, she was doing something to remind him of ‘home’ and brighten his spirits. She was having boudoir photos taken to send to him as a special gift. She couldn’t wait!

C*, you were a natural in front of the camera. You were stunning, beautiful and so much fun to work with. We hope that your husband loves the photos and we look forward to taking photos of the two of you together when he gets home.

1913 – OUR LIFE…

Since Ewan’s grandfather passed away in the fall, we’ve learned that he had so many incredible things that he’d saved over the years. We found his report card from first grade (he got all A’s), cards that he received years and years ago and some great photos of his life growing up. A favourite that surfaced last week is a photo of Ewan’s great grandparents on their wedding day in 1913. It was so neat to come across this moment in time and it’s something that we look forward to framing in our home.

Everyone has heard the expression that after the wedding day is long gone, it’s only the photos that remain. This really hit close to home when we came across this photo because we caught a glimpse into the past. Wedding photography may be very different than it was when this photo was taken, but the beauty of the day has transcended to this moment for me and this is something we’ll treasure forever.

February 24, 2009 - 6:15 am

H&H - This is really neat. We have something similar from my grandma’s parents. It’s not quite as old, but still up there. It’s cool to see a photo like this and wonder what someone’s life was like. And cool to think that they were probably thinking similar things on their wedding day as we will when we get married – like is my dress clean, where are the rings, etc. Thanks for sharing this.

February 24, 2009 - 2:49 am

heather m. - Really cool! Thanks for posting this.

February 23, 2009 - 11:43 pm

Michelle - This is the first time I’m leaving a comment, but I’ve been a blog follower for almost a year. This post really touched me so I thought I’d say hi. When my grandpa died we were in charge of cleaning out his apartment because my grandpa had been gone for a long time alrady. We came across boxes and boxes of things we thought were so random, but that my grandpa thought were important enough to keep. There was actually a bag full of hundreds and hundreds of elastics ‘just in case’ he ever needed one. We all burst out laughing when we found it because I can’t remember the last time I have ever needed even one elastic, let alone HUNDREDS!!! It’s so great, like you said to get a glimpse into someone else’s world through a photo. This was great and thanks so much for sharing it with blog stalkers like me!

Pamela - Cool!

February 23, 2009 - 11:38 pm

A.C. - I laughed out loud when I read the part about your grandpa keeping his report card from first grade. My grandparents are pack-rats and always say that we’re in for the garage sale of the century when they clean out their house.

February 23, 2009 - 11:02 pm

Brandi - So cool that you found this. I wonder what our great grandkids will think when they come across our wedding photos some day.

Mel - I can’t believe the quality of this for being almost 100 years old.

February 23, 2009 - 10:33 pm

Amanda and Justin - That is so cool. What a great thing to come across and just think of someone coming across your wedding photos 100 years from now. This is really neat.
