RACHAEL – MILph SESSION…(photos by ewan)

She used to live life on the edge. With little responsibility, she had no one to answer to. For Rachael, she did what she wanted. When she wanted. She was living her dream life…

But then came the day that she took a pregnancy test. She already knew she was pregnant before she took it, she could just feel it. It came up positive. So she took another. And another. And another. After 5 tests she was convinced that yes, she really was pregnant and felt scared, nervous, excited and happy all in the same moment. She was going to be a mom.

After M* was born, her entire life changed. Looking into his eyes, Rachael knew that she wanted to give him the best life she possibly could. Love. Hugs. Support. And letting him know how special he is every single day. In that moment that he was born, a mother was born too. She traded in her heels and dresses for flip flops and sweat pants. Flat irons turned into elastics for pony tails. Sleep was replaced with sleepless nights and buying new clothes for herself was replaced with buying clothes for the baby. But the transition was effortless. Something inside of her knew that she was always meant to be a mother and the material things no longer mattered. Coming and going didn’t matter. And sleep was something she could do without. Now as they dig in the dirt, pick dandelions and watch cartoons together, Rachael knows that this is exactly where she belongs. And that life with M* is better than she could have ever imagined. Better than she could have ever dreamed.

SARAH GRAHAM- MILph SESSION…(photos by ewan)

It’s very rare that I hand over the writing task on our blog. Sometimes Ewan will steal it away from me, but for the most part, it’s something special that I love to do. But today I just can’t beat Sarah Graham’s words. I’ve been staring at the computer screen for an hour trying to figure out what to write. How to write it. And how to get my thoughts down on paper (or screen, I guess). But the truth is that I keep going back to Sarah’s email. Her words are perfect. It’s not a story like I normally post. Instead it’s her own personal thoughts and reflections on motherhood and her MILph shoot. Thank you to Sarah for giving me permission to share your beautiful words…

“My husband makes me feel sexy. I love when I haven’t put in any effort. I’m wearing a pair of jeans and my hair is a mess and he tells me “you look beautiful today”. Just hearing it from him makes me feel that way. I remember looking at myself a few months after Lilah was born and getting upset that my body was ‘ruined’. But more recently I’ve really come to terms with my new body. It will never be the same. Motherhood has changed it. Now that I have accepted this fact, I think it’s sexy, just in a different way, a softer sort of way.

The truth is that this photo shoot felt ENTIRELY liberating. I think having a loving partner like M and giving birth to Lilah naturally and then taking these pictures have all helped me to reclaim my sexuality. While I was having the photos taken, I felt strong and beautiful. I remember closing my eyes for some of the shots and just feeling the breeze on my face – it was amazing – the sort of high I get from a great Yoga class or attending an Ani concert. Plus, I loved showing off to my husband in that dress. I’ve also started to wear a little make-up again (something I totally abandoned after having Lilah) and have been leaving my hair out of the ponytail. It’s funny how something so little can make such a difference in how I look and how I feel”.

Sarah, thank you for reminding me to look in the mirror. To embrace my stretch marks and ‘mom bum’ as our 3 year old calls it. Thank you for reminding me that motherhood is beautiful. You were a natural in front of the camera, Sarah, and I’m so glad you got a chance to be on the other side of the camera for a change. You’re an amazing person. An amazing photographer. And an amazing mother. Thank you for being you.

I am so happy to have something to look back on. A memory of me THIS MOMENT – a mother and a wife, but also so much more than that….

SANDRA REGIER – MILph SESSION…(photos by ewan)

Her mother bought her a book. It was for collecting things of the past. Storing report cards. Letters from friends. Crafts. Odds and ends. But as much as it was for reflecting on the past, it was also for collecting thoughts of the future. On the back of each section was a spot to check what you want to be when you grow up. Every year Sandra checked off ‘Mother’. Even as she grew older and this was replaced with categories like ‘Doctor’, ‘Lawyer’ and ‘Teacher’, she still added it back in. Some years she checked off ‘Lawyer’ and some years she checked off ‘Teacher’. But every single time she added in her own little box and ticked it off. “Mother”. There was no doubt in her mind.

As time rolled on, Sandra met the man of her dreams. She was 15. He was 18. Even at a young age there was not a moment of question in her mind : this was the man she would marry and start her family with. It never really occurred to Sandra that she wanted to be a photographer. She owned a camera and would take photos of her friends and family. Sending the rolls of film away, she would wait patiently for the developed images to arrive on her doorstep weeks later. She was the editor and primary photographer for her senior year book, but still, it never crossed her mind as being anything more than a hobby. Away she went to college, graduated top of her class. And she married the man of her dreams only a few months later. Bailey arrived a year and a half later. Then Rachael. Caroline. Warren and Victor. Most of her 20’s were spent either pregnant or nursing. She always knew she wanted to be a wife. Be a mom. Have a big family. And so she did.

But somewhere amongst the diapers, sleepless nights and 27 loads of laundry a week, she decided to do something just for her. Remembering her love of photography as a teenager, she enrolled in a course. Once a week she got to escape and have time just for her. She started taking photos of her kids. Other people’s kids. And she was hooked. What started as some quick snapshots, turned into assisting with another photographer, to now owning her own super successful company : Sandra Regier Photography.

She had always known she had wanted to be a wife and mother. Even back as a little girl checking off boxes in the book her mother gave her. Now, as the diapers and sleepless nights have vanished, the laundry still remains. While she may not have actively set out looking to be a photographer, she can’t imagine herself doing anything else on the planet. Those courses she took way back when were one of the best things she’s ever done. And recently Sandra did something else also just for her : a MILph session (Mom’s I Like to photograph). A chance for her to put on her favourite dress and heels. And feel sexy as a wife, a photographer and a mother of five.

You’re gorgeous, Sandra and one of the best moms I’ve ever met!

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES – THE NEWS/THE NIGHT…(photos by ewan)

I thought I was going to start this post off with a clever little line or two from a David Bowie song. But then I realized that I didn’t actually know any of the lyrics. Except ch-ch-ch-changes. And since I can’t sing well or carry tune, I think I’ll spare you the torture…

Things are changing here at the studio. We’re switching things up. Keeping things exciting. What you’re looking at right now is going to remain our main blog and where everything will still be posted. But we now also have a Boudoir specific blog too. We’ll post one image here to let you know a new post has gone up on the Boudoir blog and you can click on it to head over there. Or you can just pop into that site from time to time too. We’re going to have many many more boudoir posts than in the past and are super excited to share some of our sessions from the new studio. And you’ll be able to find information there if you’re interested in booking a session or you’re a photographer looking for more info. So we’ll hope you’ll join us and come check out our new Boudoir Blog. Thanks!
